Despite all the shit that went down with show creator Justin Roiland and the changes in voice actors that followed, it’s kinda wild to say that the Rick and Morty train is still a-rollin’ in 2024. Sure, it’s not as hip as it was when terminally online fuckfaces made life hard for McDonalds workers over a bit about Szechuan sauce, but it’s still out there.

Earlier this week, the powers that be over at Adult Swim announced that the previously revealed Rick and Morty: The Anime would finally see the light of day next month. It’s not the first time the series has dipped its toes in the Japanese animation style, but this will be the first instance of the show getting an entire 10-episode series run.

For our fellow anime metal nerds out there, it might come as a shock that Tower of God director Takashi Sano is spearheading the series, which features the same sort of inter-galactic insanity that the main show focused on. That means there’ll still be tons of crude humor, lots of wanton violence, and all sorts of multi-dimensional bullshit.

Just check out this quick synopsis of the series: “In this 10-episode anime series from the world of ‘Rick and Morty,’ Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer helps Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation, and Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl who happens to be an atemporal being.”

Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, said Sano’s direction for the series stems not only from wanting to create something visually stunning, but also from his love of the source material.

“Takashi Sano, in addition to being a super-talented director, is also a huge ‘Rick and Morty’ fan. He’s the perfect person to give us all this alternate version of this amazing show. And the perfect way to launch this series is by doing our favorite thing – drive ridiculous vehicles around and come see all of you in person. Keep an eye out for our Rickmobile and Mortymobile as they cruise across the country and wrack up various toll tickets to celebrate the expansion of the ‘Rick and Morty’ universe.”

According to Adult Swim, the first episode will air in English on Adult Swim at midnight on Thursday, August 15. Two days later, the Japanese version with English subtitles will air at midnight during the anime block of Toonami. Subscribers to the Max streaming service will have access to the English dubbed version on August 16.
